Lo que elegiste (What Was Easy)

There are truths that arrive without warning.

This was not one of them.

I had already made room for the possibility that something between us might change. I had said it aloud, more than once, as if naming it could make it less frightening.

As if honesty could soften the places where life would eventually hurt us.

I never asked you to keep everything the same.

I only asked you not to let me keep believing in something you already knew was no longer true.

I thought that would matter.

I thought all those conversations had built something between us. A small place where even the most painful truth could be held without becoming the end of everything.

I had left the door open for you.

Still, you chose the window.

You chose silence. Half-truths. Distance. You let me stand inside a version of us that you had already begun to leave.

And perhaps that is what I cannot stop returning to.

Not that something changed.

Things change.

People move toward and away from each other every day. Hearts become curious. Feelings find new places to live. I knew enough about life to understand that I could not keep you by asking you never to change.

But I believed I knew you well enough to trust that you would tell me when you did.

I had already given you permission to hurt me with the truth.

You chose to protect me with a lie.

Or maybe you were never protecting me at all.

Maybe you were only protecting the version of yourself that still existed in my eyes.

The one who would not do this.

The one who would tell me.

The one I thought I knew.

That is what your silence has taken from me.

Not only the certainty of what happened, but the certainty of everything that came before it.

Now I return to old conversations looking for cracks. I hold your words differently. I wonder how long I was speaking to someone who had already decided not to answer me honestly.

And now, there is only more silence.

As if disappearing can keep you from becoming the person who hurt me.

As if leaving me alone with the truth makes it less yours.

You could have trusted me.

That may be the part I will never understand.

I had made space for your honesty before you ever needed it. I had shown you that I could survive a truth I did not want. I had asked for nothing more than the dignity of knowing when the ground beneath us began to move.

But when the moment came, you chose what required less of you.

You chose what allowed you to postpone my pain until it no longer had to happen in front of you.

You chose what was easy.

And I am left with the strangest grief of all.

Missing someone who is still here.

Mourning someone who may have never existed in quite the way I believed.

I thought I knew you.

Now I do not know what hurts more.

That you lied to me.

Or that I had already begged you not to.
